Q - What is Router?

A Router is like the brain of your network.
It connects different devices - like your phone, computer, Laptop, and TV - to each other and to the internet. Imagine your internet connection as a big highway.

Router is a network Hardware devices that allow to make communication in between the internet and all devices which are linked to the internet your house and office.

A router is a device that connects networks and guides data to where it needs to go.

Router works like as amail carrier that helps to broadcast the internet messages to other connected devices such as laptop, pc, printer, etc.

How a Router Connects Everything

1. Internet → Modem : The internet comes from your Internet Service Provider (ISP) - that’s the big cloud in the image. It first reaches a device called a modem.

  • Think of the modem as a translator - it takes the internet signal from your provider and converts it into a form your router can understand.

2. Modem → Wireless Router :

Next step, the modem connects to your wireless router using an Ethernet or USB cable. The router is the real hero here - it takes that internet connection and shares it with every device in your home or office.

Types of ways:

• Wi-Fi (wirelessly)

• Ethernet cables(wired)

3. Router → Devices :

• Computers (1 & 2) – connected wirelessly through Wi-Fi.

• Computer 3 – connected with a cable for a faster, more stable link.

• Printers – can connect via Wi-Fi or Ethernet cable, so anyone on the network can print easily.

• Phones – use Wi-Fi to browse, stream, or make video calls.

• IP Phone – connected with a cable and uses the internet to make voice calls (instead of a regular phone line).

4. Everything Works Together :

Internet → Modem → Router → All Your Devices

A router performs data routing using a process called packet forwarding.

Receiving Data Packets: When you send data (like opening a website or show a video), it is broken into small units called data packets.

Reading Destination Address: Each packet has an IP address - like a digital home address. The router reads this address to identify where the packet needs to go.

Finding the Best Route: The router checks it is routing table, which stores paths to different networks. It chooses the most efficient route.

Forwarding the Data: Once the route is selected, the router forwards the packet toward its next destination.
